 Taraganj (Bengaliতারাগঞ্জ) is an Upazila of Rangpur District in the Division of RangpurBangladesh.

Taraganj Upazila (rangpur district) area 128.64 sq km, located in between 25°44' and 25°50' north latitudes and in between 89°07' and 89°57' east longitudes. It is bounded by kishoreganj (nilphamari) upazila on the north, badarganj upazila on the south, rangpur sadar and gangachara upazilas on the east, saidpur upazila on the west.
Population Total 119927; male 61934, female 57993; Muslim 104417, Hindu 15491, Buddhist 3 and others 16.
Water bodies Main rivers: Jamuneshwari, Chikli; Hatkhopa Beel is notable.
Administration Taraganj was under Badarganj thana before 1980. Taraganj Thana was formed on 1 January 1980 comprising 40 villages of Badarganj thana; it was turned into an upazila in 1984.'

As of the 2011 Bangladesh census, Taraganj has a population of 140823. Males constitute 51.48% of the population, and females 48.52%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 87803. Taraganj has an average literacy rate of 23.3% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[2]

Rangpur District
Rangpur (Bengaliরংপুর জেলা, Rangpur Jela also Rangpur Zila) is a district in Northern Bangladesh. It is a part of the Rangpur Division.[2]


Geography
Under the Rangpur division (one of seven divisions) composed of eight districts of the northern Bangladesh, the District of Rangpur is bordered on the north by Nilphamari District, on the south by Gaibandha District, on the east by Kurigram, and on the west by Dinajpur district. Rangpur town is the divisional headquarter. The soil composition is mainly alluvial soil (80%) of theTeesta River basin, and the remaining is barind soil. The temperature ranges from 32 degrees Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius, and the annual rainfall averages 2931 mm.[3]
History
Rangpur was conquered by the army of Raja Man Singh, a commander of the Mughal emperor, Akbar, in 1575, but it was only until 1686 that it was fully integrated into the Mughal Empire. Place names such as Mughalbasa ('Mughal locality') and Mughalhat('Mughal market') bear testimony to the Mughal association and past of Rangpur and its hinterland. Later on, Rangpur passed under the control of "Sarker" of Ghoraghat. During the period of the British East India Company, the Sannyasi Rebellion took place.
Language
Rangpur is a multi-lingual district. People of Rangpur have two languages- Rangpuri and Bengali. But Rangpuri is used by most inhabitants. Bengali is more popular in the towns and among the educated people. But a small portion of Santal and other similar people other languages also which are their own.
Demographics
Total population of Rangpur is 2534365, male 50.91%, female 49.09%. Islam is the predominant religion in Rangpur. Hinduism is the second largest religion in Rangpur. Muslim 89.60%,Hindu 9.59%, . Christian 0.50% and others 0.31%; ethnic nationals: Santal and Orao.[citation needed]
In an anthropological view most people of Rangpur are having Rajbagshi blood in their veins. This is true mainly for the villages which are the majority in Rangpur.

The district has 3 municipalities, namely, Rangpur Sadar, Badarganj, and Haragach, and eight Upazilas, namely:
Rangpur town, covering an area of around 43 square kilometers, lies on the bank of the Ghaghat river, and was turned into a municipality back in 1869. The population of the Rangpur municipality as of 2006 is 251,699, with 52% male and 48% female, and the literacy rate is 54.6%. Establishment of Rangpur City Corporation, as Divisional City is now under way after the establishment of Rangpur Division in January 2010. The area of Rangpur City Corporation is estimated to be around 100 square kilometer accommodating about 6 million population by next Census of 2011. Rangpur city would be the fifth largest city of Bangladesh after Dhaka (125 million), Chittagong (30 million), Khulna (10 million) and Rajshahi (8 million) estimated population by the next 2011 census.
Education
Begum Rokeya University is the only university in Rangpur district. The Rangpur Medical College, situated in Rangpur is one of the major government medical colleges inBangladeshCarmichael College, established in 1916 by some leading zamindars, is a postgraduate college offering courses in 14 subjects in the faculties of arts, social science, science and commerce.[4] The most renowned educational institution in this region is Rangpur Cadet College. Other renowned institutions include Cantonment Public School & College,Rangpur(CPSCR)Rangpur Government CollegePolice Lines School and College and Rangpur Zilla School. Zilla School is established in 1832, this higher secondary school is known for the quality of education it offers.[5] Other prominent educational institutions include Rangpur Government College, Begum Rokeya College and Govt. Commercial Institute. Besides there is one polytechnic institute, one vocational institute, around 282 high schools, 722 government primary schools, 38 junior high schools, 193 NGO (Non Government Organization) operated schools and almost 370 Madrasahs in Rangpur. Rangpur Model College is now hnourse college.

Tajhat Palace in Rangpur
Just south of the city of Rangpur lies the Tajhat, a former "rajbari" or zamindar's palace. After the end of the British Raj, the building was abandoned and decayed rapidly, although it was used for a few years as a courthouse during the 1980s. In the year 2004, it was largely restored and turned into a museum with ancient inscriptions, art and coins from the area on display. RDRS (Rangpur and Dinajpur Rural Service) Bangladesh,[6] an NGO in northwest Bangladesh, has a large office and guesthouse/convention center in the town of Rangpur.
A museum and women's training center was established in Pairabondh, the birthplace of Begum Rokeya. It is half an hour drive away from Rangpur city. Apart from the Tajbari museum there is another museum at the heart of the town. The town is known as Green town for its beautiful garden and green park throughout the town.

There is a big Zoo at the heart of the city. There is an ancient auditorium named 'Town Hall' at the center of the city, where different cultural programs are held. The economy of the people is weak since there is no major natural resource like minerals and industry. In the rural areas, there are no source of income for landless poor people. In the great Rangpur region, no economic development took place until the 90s, mainly because of the yearly flooding the region used to see before the making of "Teesta Barrage." The coal is found near this district. There is a large military cantonment in the town. "Bhinno Jogot" is a big theme park and a popular picnic spot which is situated 15 kilometres from Rangpur Town.
Near the stadium, there is a very beautiful place called 'Chicli vata' surrounding bij many lakes and rice fields.

Development Organisations
RDRS Bangladesh — previously Rangpur-Dinajpur Rural Service — has its main operational headquarters in Rangpur town at the RDRS Complex.[6] RDRS was established in 1972 following the War of Liberation, after assisting refugees in camps across the border in India. RDRS returned to help rehabilitate the disadvantaged northwest region of Rangpur-Dinajpur, providing relief, running health services, providing education, developing agriculture and roads, and also starting conscientization applying the Frierian approach. It is the field program of the Geneva-based Lutheran World Federation. RDRS became a fully Bangladeshi NGO in 1997 with a national Board of Trustees and Executive Director. RDRS is still a major development actor across the northwest working with around 2 million landless and marginal farmers, indigenous minorities, vulnerable communities such as the river islands and 360 Federations, i.e. community-based organizations. The RDRS Rangpur Guesthouse based on the RDRS Complex is the leading hotel in town.[citation needed]

Nagar River (Bengali : নাগর নদ) forms parts of the international border between Bangladesh and India, between the state of West Bengaland the districts of Panchagarh and Thakurgaon of Rangpur Division of Bangladesh.[1] It is one of the important rivers of Haripur Upazilain Thakurgaon District.[2] It is navigable by boats only in the wet season.

Rangpur (Bengaliরংপুর) is one of the major cities in Bangladesh and Rangpur Division. Rangpur was declared a district headquarters on 16 December 1769, and established as a municipality in 1869, making it one of the oldest municipalities in Bangladesh.[4][1] The municipal office building was erected in 1892 under the precedence Raja Janaki Ballav, Sen. Chairman of the municipality. During the period of 1890, "Shyama sundari khal" was excavated for improvement of the town. The Municipality is located in the north western part of Bangladesh.[1] A Recently established public university of Bangladesh named "Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur" is situated in the southern part of the city. Previously, Rangpur was the headquarters of Greater Rangpur district. Later the Greater Rangpur district was broken down into the RangpurKurigramNilphamariLalmonirhat andGaibandha districts. In the great Rangpur region, little economic development took place until the 90s, mainly because of the yearly flooding the region used to see before the making of the Teesta Barrage. Coal is found near this district. There is a large military cantonment in the town.

Healthcare
Rangpur is well known for its healthcare facilities throughout the north-Bengal districts. There are hundreds of hospitals, private clinics, diagnostic centers situated all over the city. The Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH), a tertiary level thousand bed facility public hospital with teaching facility in graduate and post graduate medical education. The campus of Rangpur Medical College is located in the northwest area of Rangpur. It is 210 kilometres from the Rajshahi District and 330 kilometres from Dhaka and is located next to the inter-country highway that connects India to Nepal. Prime Medical College hospital(750 beds), Doctor's Community Hospital(500 beds), Northern Private Medical College Hospital, Christian missionary hospital are the well-known private institutes. Other government institutes include a children hospital, a chest hospital and an infectious disease hospital.
A 1000 bed-hospital known as Health City is under construction aiming to provide medical treatments and surgeries.

There are a number of locally published newspapers in the district. Locally published newspapers and periodicals include Online News Portal Rangpur Crime News (2005), Daily Rangpur Chitra (2009), Dabanal (1980), Rangaprovat (1987), Juger Alo (1992), Dainik Paribesh (1994),Daily Gonoalo(2012) Dainik Rangpur (1997), Weekly Atal (1991),Rangpur Barta (1996) and Weekly Bajrakantha (Pirganj). Former newspapers which are no longer published include Rangapur Bartabaha (1847), Rangapur Dik Prakash (1861),Rangapur Darpan (1907), Uttar Bangla (1960) and Pravati (1955).[13]
Transportation
The main transport systems used in the city are cycle rickshawsauto rickshaws (mainly known as baby-taxis or CNGs), buses, mini-buses and cars. There are about 50,000 rickshaws running each day.
Roads
Rangpur is well connected by highways to Chittagong and Dhaka, as well as other parts of Rangpur. It takes about 6 to 7 hours by road to reach the capital Dhaka by National Highway 5. Bus services to other major districts are also available from Rangpur. Highway links to India have been established through the Asian Highway 2.

Air
The city of Rangpur is served by Saidpur Airport, located at the north of the city. Saidpur airport is a domestic airport.
Dialect
Many Rangpur natives speak Rangpuri language. Rangpuri is an Indic language spoken by ten million Rajbongshi people in Bangladesh and five million in India, where they are known as Rajbanshi. Many are bilingual in either Bengali or Assamese. Rangpuri goes by numerous names. In Bangladesh, these include Rangpuri, Bahe Bangla, Anchalit Bangla, Kamta, Polia. The main dialects are Western Rajbanshi, Central Rajbanshi, Eastern Rajbanshi and Hill Rajbanshi(also known as Koch language).
Sports
The most popular sport in Rangpur is cricket, although football is also popular. There is a 10,000+ capacity stadium in the city. It is known as Rangpur Stadium. It is used for football and other sports. Besides different organization share to stage a show there occasionally. There are another ground known as Cricket Garden[14] and is mainly used for cricket. There are also a few sports training academies in the city. In domestic Twenty20 cricket, Rangpur has a Bangladesh Premier League franchise known as Rangpur Riders. On December 2012, I Sports bought the Rangpur franchise for $1.01 m. Notable players from Rangpur who have played for the national team include Nasir Hossain,[15]Suhrawadi Shuvo.[16]
